VMware to Proxmox migration

VMware licensing has changed and costs have gone up. Proxmox VE is an open-source alternative that runs the same workloads without per-core licences. NIOSS plans and carries out the move: from a single host to a clustered setup with shared storage and high availability.

  • Assess the current VMware estate and plan the move
  • Build the Proxmox cluster: nodes, networking, storage, HA
  • Migrate VMs with minimal downtime and test each one
  • Set up backups and hand over clear documentation

Found why a laptop fleet failed at random – and fixed it

Traced random post-build faults to an Active Directory replication timing problem, and designed a workaround that needed no change to the deployment system: 19 of 19 laptops built correctly, against up to 6 in 10 failing before.
